► (1628-88) Escritor y predicador puritano inglés. Alcanzó gran reputación con la obra El viaje del peregrino (1678), interesante por sus experiencias religiosas.

Pastor y escritor inglés. Alistado en el ejército de Oliver Cromwell durante las guerras civiles inglesas, conoció la ferviente vida religiosa de varias sectas izquierdistas. Después de un período de crisis espiritual, se convirtió al puritanismo y llegó a ser predicador. Tras la Restauración pasó doce años en la cárcel –acusado de disidente–, durante los cuales escribió su autobiografía espiritual, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners [Gracia abundante para el mayor pecador] (1666). Se le conoce sobre todo por El viaje del peregrino (1678–84), alegoría religiosa que defiende la visión religiosa puritana mediante la representación simbólica del peregrinaje del cristiano a través de la vida. En su tiempo sólo la Biblia superaba este libro en popularidad entre los lectores comunes. A pesar de sus responsabilidades como pastor, Bunyan publicó numerosas obras en sus últimos diez años de vida.
